| Au cours de ce travail, nous nous sommes efforcés de rendre compte des principaux caractères de l'ostréiculture méditerranéenne, particulièrement dans l'étang de Thau, en situant le plus exactement possible les taux de croissance observés, les rendements obtenus et les principaux facteurs qui influencent cette croissance. De cette étude, il se dégage que l'étang de Thau constitue un milieu particulièrement favorable à l'élevage des huîtres. Cependant, nous avons vu que le taux de croissance présentait des variations locales importantes : excellent en de nombreux points, il n'est que moyen en beaucoup d'autres. | Until now, French Mediterranean shellfish culture was only carried out at relatively sheltered sites: some salted lagoons in Languedoc-Roussillon and Corsica and in the roadsted of Toulon The shellfish culture area of the Thau lagoon spreads out over about 1,200 hectares, that of Leucate over 140 hectares; in Corsica, shellfish farming is carried out on small rafts distributed among the different lagoons (around 80 in Diana and 50 in Urbino). | In 1973 the" Institut des Peches Maritimes (Centre de Sete) "prospected the Mediterranean coasts to obtain information about the possibilities of collecting flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) spat. Plastic collectors were submerged at 20 stations in the Golfe du Lion. In spite of some lose of equipment, observations have allowed to see that spat densities were excellent (5.5 to 9.4 per dm2 of collector) in most areas. |

| Tapes decussates (Linnaeus), due to its economic value, is heavily fished in the Thau Lagoon. There are two types of fishing practices.First, "sight" fishing, the most common and highest paying practise is also the most selective.The fisher is equipped with a light flat-bottomed boat "néga fol" and lies at one of the ends with his face just on the surface of the water.
